Morocco and Spain Revive Plans for Ambitious Gibraltar Strait Tunnel Project

The project for a fixed link via the Strait of Gibraltar was the subject of a virtual meeting held on Wednesday between the Moroccan and Spanish authorities. On this occasion, the two parties expressed their mutual willingness to revitalize this strategic intercontinental project with high potential.
During this meeting, which is in preparation for the High-Level meeting scheduled in Morocco, the Moroccan Minister of Equipment, Transport, Logistics and Water, Abdelkader Amara, and the Spanish Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, José Luis Abalos, agreed on the draft memorandum of technical cooperation currently being finalized by the two parties.
Minister Abdelkader Amara stressed that the realization of the project for a fixed link between Morocco and Spain would make it possible to connect not only two countries, but also two continents. Thus, "Morocco would serve as a link between Europe and Africa," he said happily. Furthermore, Mr. Amara recalled that the project is intended to be structuring for the years to come and will make it possible to enhance the two companies already in charge of the technical study of this project.
This intergovernmental meeting, in addition to the cooperation between the Moroccan and Spanish ports, made it possible to address the issue related to the development of the Tangier-Marrakech high-speed line (HSL). On this subject, the officials of the Ministry of Equipment, Transport, Logistics and Water, as well as the Spanish Ambassador to Morocco, Ricardo Diez Hochleitner Rodriguez, exchanged possibilities of extending the existing cooperation between the two kingdoms in the fields of infrastructure, land and maritime transport and logistics.
