Spain-Morocco Undersea Tunnel Project Gains Momentum After Decades of Planning

Things are taking shape for the project to build a tunnel connecting Spain and Morocco under the Strait of Gibraltar. Exchanges have taken place between the parties in recent months.

Under study since 1979, the project to build a tunnel between Spain and Morocco is back on the table. At the time, the two countries had created public companies, respectively SNED and SECEGSA. The officials of the latter have met with political and social representatives of Gibraltar in recent months as part of this project, reports Hortidaily. During the last meeting between Pablo Diaz, head of the socio-economic development area of SECEGSA, the mayor of San Roque, Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix and other stakeholders in the project, the former specified that the construction of the tunnel could start in the decades to come.

The study of the project is progressing rapidly. Construction work should probably start in the 2030s or 2040s. The results of the studies carried out for more than 40 years by SECEGSA concern the construction of a 38.67 kilometer tunnel that will connect the two shores of the strait between Punta Paloma, in Tarifa, and Punta Malabata, near Tangier. According to the characteristics of the underwater section of the tunnel, the length would be 27.75 kilometers, the maximum depth of 475 meters and a slope of 3%.
