Spain and Morocco Revive Plans for Strategic Gibraltar Strait Tunnel

Monday 15 April 2024, by Prince

Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente, during a visit to Morocco in March, renewed Spain’s interest in the Gibraltar Strait tunnel, a "strategic" project that will be on the agenda of the next High-Level Meeting between Morocco and Spain.

On this occasion, Puente informed the Moroccan Minister of Transport, Mohammed Abdeljalil, and the Minister of Infrastructure and Water, Nizar Baraka, of the interest of Spanish companies in participating in the development projects of the transport sector in the kingdom in general and in the Morocco-Spain tunnel under the strait in particular.

During this meeting, the two parties emphasized the strategic nature of the tunnel project, whose studies are underway, and agreed to develop a common communication plan. The next Spanish-Moroccan Joint Committee, whose date is not yet known, will address the issue and allow progress in defining the project, according to La Razón.

"A boost will be given to the studies of the project, launched by the two countries forty years ago, a strategic project for Spain and Morocco but also for Europe and Africa," had declared Raquel Sánchez, the Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, during the last Spain-Morocco Summit held in Rabat in 2023.

According to preliminary studies, the 42-km tunnel will allow the transport of passengers and goods with shuttle trains for vehicles and trucks, as well as conventional passenger and freight trains between Europe and Africa. The objective is to facilitate the movement of people and goods between the two continents.
