Provocations at the Moroccan border
New tensions have erupted at the Moroccan-Algerian border after warning shots fired by the Algerian army near farmers in Figuig. The residents denounce intimidation tactics and an attempt to unilaterally redefine the border line.
The Algerian army is accused of having multiplied provocations in the border area of Ich, in the province of Figuig. On Monday, warning shots were reported near Moroccan farmers, just a few days after a first incursion aimed at modifying the border markers. These incidents, described as "hostile practices" by the locals, mark a worrying escalation in this rural region where agricultural and pastoral activities are vital.

According to local testimonies, about thirty Algerian soldiers would have carried out a "show of force", going so far as to point their weapons at civilians working in their fields. This psychological pressure aims, according to the residents, to sow fear and to challenge the sovereignty of the lands historically exploited by Moroccan families, despite the principles of good neighborliness that prevailed in the past.

Faced with this growing insecurity, civil society is organizing. A monitoring committee has been set up and was to meet the provincial governor on Tuesday to assess the situation and request the protection of the Royal Armed Forces. At the same time, the diaspora has seized the French presidency, calling on the Élysée to assume its historical responsibility in the tracing of borders inherited from the colonial period.
