33 drill holes to uncover the copper and silver hidden beneath Morocco’s Atlas Mountains

The program officially began this Wednesday, September 2, according to a regulatory announcement by Talisman Metals. The company, listed in London on the AIM market, plans 33 drill holes totaling 2,770 meters.

The depths will vary considerably depending on the areas, from 40 to 140 meters. The operations will be spread across an entire four-kilometer-long mineralized corridor. Talisman also reserves the option of adding further drill holes if new, promising targets emerge during the work.

The campaign is being carried out using reverse circulation drilling by Geosond Maroc. When announcing the mobilization of the equipment on August 18, Talisman Metals expected approximately six weeks of work before the laboratory analyses gradually arrive.

The Tirzzit project is not new. Aya Gold & Silver had acquired this Moroccan copper and silver deposit in 2023, with the ambition of exploring an area that had previously received relatively little study.

Talisman has since taken over the project from an Aya Gold & Silver subsidiary. The formal transfer of the licenses is still being processed, the British company said. Aya also holds 4.7% of Talisman’s capital.

Copper already identified in the area

Tirzzit covers two mining licenses representing 16.5 km². Earlier work conducted between 1972 and 1976 by the Bureau de recherches et de participations minières had already identified copper in several drill holes.

Among the historical results cited by Talisman are an intersection containing 3.16% copper over 2.5 meters and another containing 0.60% over 11.4 meters.

More recent surface work has also increased interest in the area. In August, Talisman published several sampling results exceeding 2% copper, along with silver grades. One of the samples notably reached 2.62% copper over 1.69 meters.

The aim of the 33 new drill holes is now to verify what lies at depth and better determine the continuity of this mineralization across the four kilometers identified. At this stage, the company has not yet announced an exploitable mineral resource for Tirzzit.

This new campaign comes as several copper-related projects are currently progressing in Morocco, both in mining exploration and in the industrial processing of the metal.

Talisman is in fact focusing most of its strategy on Moroccan copper. The British company is developing several projects in the Atlas Mountains and presents Tirzzit as one of its main exploration assets.

The first results from the 33 drill holes should be released gradually after the samples are sent to laboratories. Above all, they will show whether the copper indications already observed at the surface and in the old drill holes extend far enough at depth to justify a new exploration phase.
