La Mamounia plunges from 6th to 75th place worldwide in three years

The ranking published on September 1 by The World’s 50 Best Hotels places La Mamounia between Bodrum’s Maçakızı, in 76th place, and the Four Seasons Tamarindo in Mexico, in 74th place.

No other African hotel appears among the establishments ranked from 51st to 100th place. However, it will be necessary to wait until September 15 to find out the top 50 and whether other establishments from the continent, particularly Moroccan ones, are included.

La Mamounia has fallen sharply compared with the previous editions. It ranked 30th worldwide in 2025 and 31st in 2024. In 2023, the first edition of this international hotel ranking, the Marrakech palace had even climbed to sixth place.

In 2024, La Mamounia and the Royal Mansour were still both among the 50 best hotels in the world.

From 6th to 75th place in three years

This decline does not mean that La Mamounia has lost all international recognition. The establishment continues to accumulate distinctions in various rankings devoted to luxury hospitality and was once again awarded in 2026.

The World’s 50 Best Hotels particularly highlights the palace’s gardens, its rooms with carved cedar ceilings, the zellige tiles, its terraces overlooking the olive and orange trees, as well as its two mosaic hammams. The ranking also recalls the historical connection between the hotel and Winston Churchill, who used to stay in Marrakech.

Opened in 1923, La Mamounia has become one of the most emblematic addresses in Moroccan hospitality. The palace has more than 200 rooms and suites and has undergone several major renovations throughout its history.

La Mamounia and the Royal Mansour also regularly rank among the Moroccan hotels with the greatest international visibility.

The World’s 50 Best Hotels ranking is based on votes from more than 800 international travel professionals and specialists. Each voter selects their seven best stays made during the previous three years. Hotels cannot submit their applications or pay to enter the ranking.

The list unveiled on Monday constitutes only the first half of the 2026 ranking. The establishments ranked from first to 50th place will be revealed on September 15 at a ceremony organized in Paris. It is on that occasion that it will become known in particular whether the Royal Mansour or other African hotels have managed to remain in the global top 50.
