Polisario Front Urges Spain to Clarify Stance on Western Sahara Dispute

The representative of the Polisario Front in Spain, Abaulah Arabi, has asked the President of the Government, Pedro Sanchez, to "rectify" Spain’s position on the Sahara and to "clarify" the notion of Morocco’s territorial integrity mentioned in his letter to Mohammed VI dated March 14.

Abaulah Arabi made this statement on Saturday, during the XXVI Conference "Peace and Freedom for the Sahrawi People" held in the parliament of La Rioja, and attended by all the regional parliamentarians of the country. The initiative aims to mobilize support for the self-determination of the Sahara, according to EFE.

The Polisario Front demands that Sanchez explain "what he means by Morocco’s territorial integrity" mentioned in his letter to Mohammed VI in which he expressed Spain’s support for the Moroccan autonomy plan, said Arabi, asking Sanchez to specify whether it is the internationally recognized Moroccan borders or those integrating the Sahara.

"This turnaround of the Spanish government has been rejected by almost all instances at the national and regional level because it is a decision that violates international law and was taken unilaterally by Sanchez, without consulting parliament," denounced Arabi, adding that this new position of Spain excludes it from playing the role of "mediator" in this conflict in the Sahara in order to seek a solution within the framework of international law.

For the Sahrawi leader in Spain, this decision of the Spanish government to support the Moroccan autonomy plan does not change the political and legal status of the Sahara, which remains an "occupied" territory, in the sense of international law. Arabi also called for "continuing this struggle peacefully and with the same determination until the final objective is reached, that of liberating the Sahrawi people".
