Polisario Front Condemns Trump’s Western Sahara Decision

The announcement of the recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara by the United States last Thursday is provoking strong reactions. The declaration is condemned by the Polisario Front, which maintains that this decision is contrary to the position of the international community.
Through a statement, the Sahrawi independence movement "categorically opposes" the decision of outgoing President Donald Trump to recognize Moroccan authority over the Western Sahara. "The Polisario and the Sahrawi government condemn in the strongest terms the fact that the outgoing American president Donald Trump attributes to Morocco what does not belong to it," declared the "Sahrawi Ministry of Information" in the communiqué sent to AFP.
However, "Trump’s decision does not change the legal nature of the Sahrawi issue, as the international community does not recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara," the statement notes, adding that "it constitutes a flagrant violation of the United Nations Charter and the founding texts of the African Union (AU)".
Also, the Polisario calls on the UN and the AU to "put pressure on the Kingdom of Morocco to end its occupation of the Western Sahara". Moreover, the movement affirms, the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, has indicated that his position remains "unchanged" and "that the solution to this issue can still be found on the basis of the Security Council resolutions".
