US Formally Submits Western Sahara Recognition to UN Security Council

The document materializing the decision to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara taken by the United States was presented to the UN on Tuesday, December 15.
Officially and solemnly, the United States has transmitted to the UN with all its decision-making bodies, their resolution to recognize Moroccan authority over the Saharan regions. The US Ambassador-Representative to the UN, Kelly Craft, sent a written document to the rotating Presidency of the Security Council, represented by South African Ambassador Jerry Matthews Matjila.
Similarly, a copy of the letter and the text of the decision signed by President Donald Trump were sent to the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres.
In addition to recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, the United States has also stated through Kelly Craft’s letter that the Kingdom’s autonomy proposal remains the only basis for finding a good solution to the conflict. At the same time, the United States has requested the publication of these documents to the members of the Security Council.
