A hundred baguettes are scattered across the ground, but there are no animals nearby to eat them. At a property in Ayamonte, near the Portuguese border, the detail arouses the suspicions of Spanish police. They inspect the area and discover a trapdoor hidden beneath the baguettes.

The entrance leads to an underground stash containing more than 1,000 kilos of hashish. The site is protected by firearms, including one that is ready to fire. The setup is described in a statement by the Spanish Interior Ministry published on Monday, October 26.

In trying to conceal the entrance to their hideout, the traffickers drew the investigators’ attention. The unusual quantity of bread led the officers to inspect the ground.

A tonne beneath the bread, four tonnes in total

Police continue searching the other areas of the property. More packages are found. The final tally from the operation exceeds four tonnes of hashish seized, including more than a tonne from the underground stash.

The investigation began in 2024. Police suspect a network of bringing hashish and cocaine in along the coast of Huelva, aboard fishing boats and speedboats. Some shipments travelled up the Guadiana River before being stored and then distributed to several European countries.

According to the Spanish daily El Faro de Ceuta, the seized hashish came from Morocco.

During the search, the suspected drug guard tries to move 600 kilos in a trailer hitched to his off-road vehicle. Arrested at the scene, he is later jailed on suspicion of drug trafficking, membership in a criminal organization and illegal possession of firearms.
