High-Seas Hashish Heist: Spanish Guards Thwart Massive Drug Smuggling Operation
The Civil Guards recently seized 1.7 tons of hashish from Morocco after a spectacular high-speed chase in the strait.
Drug trafficking by boat is increasing in the strait. The coasts of Cadiz, particularly those of Chipiona, Sanlúcar or La Línea, have become the gateway for hashish from Morocco. Drug traffickers are willing to do anything, including resorting to violence, to smuggle hashish into Spain.
The recent high-speed chase at sea led to the arrest of four people and the seizure of a 14-meter-long boat equipped with four 350-horsepower engines, in which 1.7 tons of hashish and fuel cans were found.
The Civil Guard, with the support of SIVE, detected the suspicious drug-carrying boat. A helicopter and Civil Guard boats, members of the Provincial Maritime Service of Cadiz and the Rota Air Unit participated in the operation, which also led to the seizure of 114 cans loaded onto an abandoned inflatable boat in the area.
