Oukaïmeden Ski Resort: Waste Crisis Threatens High Atlas Tourism

The picture-perfect image has been tarnished. In a strongly worded statement, the Atlas Association for Ecotourism described the current environmental situation in Oukaïmeden as “catastrophic.” According to the organization, the accumulation of rubbish has become a familiar feature of the landscape, in stark contradiction with the status of this resort, which attracts thousands of national and international tourists every year.

The NGO points to structural management shortcomings, citing an insufficient number of containers and the absence of a regular cleaning program. This “clear failure” poses serious risks to a mountain ecosystem considered fragile. The association warns of contamination of the soil and water resources, as well as dangers to vegetation cover and public health.

Faced with this situation, which threatens the region’s sustainable tourism model, activists are calling on the authorities to take urgent action. They are demanding a comprehensive waste-management plan, including stronger infrastructure, increased monitoring, and the direct involvement of local communities and professionals in preserving the site.
