Nomadic Shepherd Attacks Disrupt Schools in Southern Morocco, Raising Security Concerns

Recently, pro-Polisario graffiti had been tagged in a college in Arbâa Sahel in the province of Tiznit, and nomadic shepherds were then suspected. Now, in the same rural commune, there are talks of attacks by bands linked to... Sahrawi nomadic shepherds. The prevailing insecurity prevents children from going to primary schools, colleges and high schools.

The schools are still open but... For a week now, primary, middle and high school students in Arbaâ Sahel have not been able to go to their schools because of potential attacks by nomadic shepherds. Teachers have complained about the prevailing insecurity.

The National Federation of Education (FNE) has contacted the Delegate Prefect of Education in Tiznit so that he can look into the issue of fear and insecurity in the aforementioned commune "because of bands linked to nomadic shepherds".

The federation is asking for concrete solutions to allow students to continue their schooling. The Sahrawi nomadic shepherds would be the authors of repeated attacks, the main targets of which are land and agricultural properties.

Finally, it should be noted that for some time now, the local population and the nomads present in the region have been in perpetual conflict, as the nomads would illegally settle in grazing lands and destroy crops.
