Netflix: bad news for Moroccans

The platform has begun notifying its Moroccan subscribers by email. For the Standard plan, the increase amounts to 15 dirhams per month, or approximately 23%.

The Essential plan, meanwhile, will increase from 37 to 45 dirhams per month. Its users will therefore pay an additional 8 dirhams each month, or 96 dirhams more over a year.

Netflix now offers subscriptions in Morocco ranging from 45 to 115 dirhams per month.

An increase justified by new content

In its message, Netflix explains this revision by its desire to offer more films and series, as well as a better experience for its customers. The platform notably announces at least 64 new releases during the following month.

This increase comes a few weeks after the Moroccan system for taxing foreign providers of digital services came into effect. Since June 11, these companies have been required to declare their local turnover in Morocco and pay the corresponding VAT.

Netflix has nevertheless made no connection between this new tax obligation and the increase in its subscription prices. For Moroccan customers, the consequence is already clear: up to 15 dirhams more per month starting in September.
