MRE Morocco VAT Refund: Excluded Products Guide
Moroccans residing abroad can benefit from VAT refunds on certain purchases made in Morocco. However, not all products are eligible. The Moroccan customs guide lists several exclusions to know before requesting tax refunds at the borders.
MREs visiting Morocco can claim a refund of the value-added tax paid on purchases of a non-commercial nature, provided that these goods are intended for use abroad.

This tax refund applies to purchases made on the same day from the same seller, for an amount of 2,000 dirhams or more including VAT. However, this rule does not apply to all products.
Purchases excluded from tax refund
The Customs Administration guide specifies that several categories of goods are excluded from VAT refunds. This is the case for food products, whether solid or liquid.
Manufactured tobacco is also not covered by the tax refund. The same exclusion applies to medicines, unmounted precious stones, weapons, means of transport for private use, as well as their equipment and supplies.
Cultural goods are also among the products excluded from this scheme. In other words, even if the purchase exceeds the 2,000 dirham threshold, it does not automatically entitle you to a VAT refund.
Goods must be presented to customs
To benefit from the tax refund, the traveler must present the purchased goods to customs services before boarding. They must also provide the invoice corresponding to their purchases as well as the sales slip in three copies provided by the seller.
This customs clearance is essential. Without a customs stamp on the sales slip, the refund cannot be finalized.
A three-month deadline to get reimbursed
Once the sales slip is validated by customs, it must be communicated to the tax refund service provider, approved by the General Tax Authority. The guide sets a three-month deadline from the date of purchase of the items.

The tax refund can therefore represent an interesting advantage for MREs making purchases in Morocco. However, it requires complying with the conditions provided and verifying, before purchase, that the products in question are not part of the exclusions provided by customs.
