Moroccan Expats: How to Claim VAT Refunds on Purchases During Home Visits

If you are a Moroccan resident abroad (MRE) visiting Morocco, you can claim a refund of some of your purchases. The latest Moroccan customs guide provides details on this subject.
Conditions for VAT refund
The VAT refund is accessible for non-commercial purchases that are intended to be used abroad. This possibility is open for goods purchased on the same day from the same seller and whose amount is equal to or greater than 2,000 dirhams, including VAT.
Exclusions
It should be noted that certain products are excluded from this tax refund. The list includes:
• Food products (solid and liquid)
• Manufactured tobacco
• Medicines
• Unset precious stones
• Weapons
• Private means of transport, as well as their equipment and supplies
• Cultural goods
Procedure to follow
To benefit from this VAT refund, MREs must, before boarding, present the purchased goods to the customs services. The necessary documents are the invoice corresponding to the purchases and the sales slip in three copies provided by the seller.
Refund
Finally, to get the refund, the sales slip, bearing the customs stamp, must be communicated to the tax refund service provider. It is imperative to respect a deadline of three months from the date of purchase of the articles.
The tax refund at the borders represents an interesting opportunity for Moroccans residing abroad during their visits to Morocco. However, MREs must be aware of the criteria and exclusions, and scrupulously follow the procedure to benefit from it. Paying close attention to the details can help take advantage of this tax benefit and save on purchases made in the country.
