Morocco’s Wheat Production Surges, Reducing Import Needs

Morocco’s wheat production, formerly in difficulty, has recovered during the 2020/2021 season. As a result, the kingdom will reduce its purchases on the international market.
Contrary to the last two seasons, domestic wheat production is improving. The Ministry of Agriculture announces a production of 7.5 million tons, or 48.2 million Qx of soft wheat and 23.4 million Qx of durum wheat during this year’s campaign, reports Agence Ecofin, adding that this increase will result in a decrease in purchases of 4.5 million tons of the cereal compared to 4.8 million tons in 2019/2020.
Citing the latest report from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), the site indicates that this decline in purchases is mainly due to the good production of the country in 2021/2022 thanks to the abundant rains that fell in most of the growing areas.
Note that France and Ukraine continue to control the largest share of the Moroccan soft wheat market, while Canada dominates the durum wheat market. Morocco is the 3rd African consumer of wheat behind Egypt and Algeria with more than 10 million tons of the cereal per year, the report points out.
