Morocco watermelons shake Spanish producers market competition
Spanish summer fruit producers are worried about foreign competition. Facing pressure from imports, particularly from Morocco, they are calling on their government to protect their revenues and prevent price collapse.
The agricultural union Unión de Uniones is warning about the increase in imported volumes from outside the European Union. While Brazil remains the main non-EU supplier, Morocco and Senegal are weighing heavily on the watermelon market at crucial commercial times. Faced with this situation reported by El Debate, the organization is demanding that the Ministry of Agriculture implement strict monitoring of entries during these sensitive phases. Farmers are calling for increased commercial transparency and effective withdrawal mechanisms to prevent sharp price drops when volumes accumulate.

On the national level, the season had started with prices up compared to previous years. The trend then reversed with the arrival of new harvest areas, "especially Castilla-La Mancha in the case of melon and watermelon." Despite favorable crop development and a German market absorbing more than 300,000 tonnes of Spanish watermelons, the sector fears the effects of excessive supply. The overlap of calendars, sometimes accentuated by foreign products stored in cold storage, makes crisis management tools vital to guarantee farmer profitability.
