Morocco to Upgrade Diplomatic Ties with Israel, Open Embassy in Tel Aviv

Hassan Kaabia, spokesperson for the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, says that the Moroccan Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, will travel to Israel in the coming days to open the liaison office in Tel Aviv. An office that will then be transformed into an embassy.

"Soon, Bahrain will open an embassy in Tel Aviv and Morocco will upgrade its diplomatic relations with Israel and transform a liaison office into an embassy," he said in an interview with the Anadolu agency. Hassan Kaabia added that the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Nasser Bourita, will travel to Israel very soon to open the liaison office in Tel Aviv. "In the coming weeks, the representation of the liaison offices in Rabat and Tel Aviv will be transformed into a full-fledged embassy," he specified.

The two countries normalized their diplomatic relations on December 10, 2020. Israel has already inaugurated its liaison office in Rabat. "According to the agreement signed between Israel and Morocco, full diplomatic relations will be established between the two countries," said the spokesperson for the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stressing that the "peace agreement between Israel, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Sudan" is a "different model" from that with the kingdom, because Tel Aviv had never had diplomatic relations with these countries before.
