Israel Opens Diplomatic Office in Morocco, Strengthening Ties

The liaison office of the State of Israel was inaugurated on Thursday in Rabat by the Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yair Lapid, who is currently visiting Morocco.
The opening of this office is part of the resumption of diplomatic relations between Rabat and Tel Aviv, on December 22, 2020, reports the MAP, specifying that it was attended by Mr. Mohcine Jazouli, Minister Delegate to Foreign Affairs.
During the ceremony, the ministers cut the ribbon and unveiled the office, before the head of the Israeli delegation, David Govrin, installed a mezuzah on the entrance door.
Israeli media sources indicate that the inauguration of this office is the first step in the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The higher stage, namely the opening of an embassy, is often cited as very likely.
Yair Lapid is visiting Morocco at the head of a delegation that includes in particular the Minister of Labor, Meir Cohen and the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee in the Knesset (Israeli parliament), Ram Ben Barak.
To recall, the office had been closed in October 2000.
