Morocco Unveils First Domestically Manufactured Car, Showcases Hydrogen Prototype

King Mohammed VI presided on Monday at the Royal Palace in Rabat the ceremony to present the first vehicle of a Moroccan automotive manufacturer, as well as the prototype of a hydrogen-powered vehicle developed by a Moroccan living abroad.
The first car was designed by Neo Motors, a Moroccan-owned company, whose factory is based in Ain Aouda, in the Rabat-Salé-Kenitra region. This vehicle is intended for the local market and for export, it is indicated in a press release, specifying that this first model has already been approved in February by the National Road Safety Agency.
The factory should produce 27,000 units per year and generate 580 jobs. At a cost of 156 million dirhams (14 million euros), it will likely start operations in June and will launch "the first 100% Moroccan car brand".
As for the hydrogen vehicle prototype, it was developed by the company Namx, in collaboration with the Italian coachbuilder Pininfarina. The car will be powered by hydrogen from a central tank complemented by six other removable small tanks, which will guarantee it a long range.
This pilot project, the note specifies, aims to position Morocco "in the global dynamic of developing new forms of transport combining efficiency and respect for the environment".
