Morocco Unveils $38 Billion National Water Plan to Combat Drought Through 2050

Morocco is counting on the 2020-2050 National Water Plan (PNE) to meet the water challenges over the next thirty years.
This plan, estimated at 383 billion dirhams, is an extension of the priority water program, approved by King Mohammed VI, said the Head of Government, on December 25, during a meeting of the ministerial commission on water.
Chaired by Saâdeddine El Othmani, this meeting was devoted to the presentation of the various axes and components of the PNE project with a view to its optimization and improvement, pending its presentation to the National Water Council. The Head of the Executive also reiterated the importance that Morocco attaches to the problems generated by climate change, particularly those related to water resources, both in quantity and quality, according to a press release relayed by MAP.
The balanced Moroccan experience in terms of water mobilization, under the leadership of Hassan II, was also mentioned. This policy has enabled the Kingdom to equip itself with significant infrastructure for the mobilization and storage of water, covering all regions. Between large and small dams, distribution canals and treatment plants, these points have, according to the Head of Government, contributed "to ensuring the needs of citizens and the national economy in this vital resource".
El Othmani also dwelt on the new challenges facing Morocco, namely the mobilization, treatment and storage of water resources, as well as the new measures required and on which the King continues to insist.
