Morocco U23 Team Clinches Olympic Spot After Thrilling Penalty Shootout Win Over Mali

The Moroccan under-23 team qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, narrowly defeating Mali on penalties (2-2, 4-3), in the semi-final of the U23 Africa Cup of Nations. Twelve years after their last participation, the Atlas Cubs will thus join the Olympics and face Egypt in the CAN final.
The Moroccans, led by Abdessamad Ezzalzouli, shone in the first half, before suffering from the Malian offensive in the second half. Zakaria El Ouahdi opened the scoring for the Atlas Cubs in the 14th minute, concluding a superb combination between Bilal El Khannouss and Ismaïl Saibari. However, the second half was dominated by the Malians, whose offensive play suffocated the Moroccan defense.
The Malian team managed to equalize in the 66th minute thanks to a shot from Mamady Diambou, leading to strategic substitutions in the Moroccan team. The pressure increased further during extra time, with a new Moroccan lead in the 108th minute by Amine El Ouazzani, followed by a second Malian equalizer by Maiga in the 116th minute.
Finally, the decision came down to penalties. Mali missed their first shot, while the Moroccans successfully converted all their shots, securing the precious ticket to the Paris 2024 Olympics and the U23 CAN final. Mali will have another chance to qualify for the Olympics during the classification match against Guinea.
