Morocco: A truck without brakes crushes a crowded cafe, 4 dead and a neighborhood on fire
The town of Fnideq woke up in horror this Saturday morning. An out-of-control truck collided head-on with a crowded cafe, turning an ordinary morning into an absolute tragedy. The toll stands at four dead and eight injured after the fire caused by the impact.
A mechanical failure turned into a tragedy on Mohammed V Street. The braking system of a heavy vehicle failed, leaving the vehicle unable to stop. The truck’s trajectory ended violently against the facade of a popular cafe, trapping the customers inside.
The impact triggered a fire. The flames ravaged the establishment before spreading to a neighboring house. The civil protection teams had to fight the fire to extract the victims from the rubble. Four people died, while eight others were evacuated to the Fnideq hospital.
The material damage extends beyond the destroyed cafe. The violence of the impact damaged a hotel and two residential buildings located on the main thoroughfare. The authorities have blocked traffic to secure the perimeter, while an investigation is now trying to establish the exact responsibilities for this disaster.
