Morocco towing fees scandal: motorists demand transparency
Motorists in Marrakech are denouncing the lack of transparency and excessive costs of vehicle impounding. Facing this discontent, a human rights defense organization is demanding an administrative investigation to clarify the management of this towing service.
The removal of vehicles in violation is turning into a financial nightmare for drivers. Several complaints reveal that users must pay up to 300 dirhams solely for towing, a sum to which storage fees, fines and penalties are added. Citizens claim they receive no itemized invoice justifying these amounts or identifying the final beneficiaries. This lack of transparency in service management is sparking a wave of outrage and many questions about the principle of accountability.

To defuse this crisis, a local association has taken up the issue. The organization is calling for the immediate opening of an independent administrative investigation to verify pricing criteria. It urges the wali of the Marrakech-Safi region and the president of the municipal council to intervene urgently. The objective is to force the administration to make public the specifications, contracts and decisions governing this activity in order to restore citizens’ confidence.

While the intervention of police officers when recording violations is praised for its professionalism, the rest of the procedure remains under fire. The association demands clear display of official rates directly on the trucks and inside the municipal impound, as well as improved customer service. The systematic issuance of legal receipts is essential because any collection must be based on a transparent basis to "guarantee the protection of users’ rights and the preservation of public funds".
