Morocco Tourism Surges 6% Despite Recent Tragedy, Welcoming 3.5 Million Visitors
Tourism in Morocco seems to be unaffected by the crisis, despite the tragic events that occurred in the Imili region last December with the murder of two Scandinavian tourists.
3.5 million tourists, according to the Tourism Observatory. The number of foreigners and Moroccans from the diaspora who visited Morocco between January and April 2019. An increase of 6% compared to 2018, during the same period. But, only in April of the current year, 1.07 million tourists visited the kingdom, an increase of 11.5% compared to 2018.
Regarding the overall total indicated, 2.28 million foreign tourists must be deducted, equivalent to an increase of 5.3% compared to the 2018 figures, and 54% compared to 2010. In particular, the number of Americans who visited Morocco from January to April increased by 14%, for a total of 125,457 US tourists.
At the hotel level, the Tourism Observatory recorded 7.98 million overnight stays during the period analyzed. This represents an increase of 6% compared to 2018, and 48% compared to 2010. As for foreign visitors, they accounted for 5.7 million overnight stays. Alone, French tourists made 1.63 million overnight stays.
As for the major Moroccan tourist destinations, Marrakech and Agadir are in the lead. As of April 30, 2019, they alone accounted for 58% of overnight stays.
