Morocco’s Taxi Drivers Prepare to Resume Service Amid COVID-19 Testing and Fare Negotiations

After more than two months of work stoppage due to covid-19, the drivers of large and small taxis in the cities of Rabat, Salé and Témara are preparing to resume work. They are calling for a review of their fares.
Meetings have been organized between the officials of the Salé prefecture and the representatives of the taxi drivers’ unions, reports Hespress. Several decisions have been made, including the exemption from paying the license fees for 3 months and the increase in the price of the fare.
Regarding the payment of license fees, the final decision will be adopted at a meeting scheduled for Tuesday. As for the cost of trips, an increase in the rates of large taxis has been proposed due to the reduction in the number of passengers during the health confinement period, says the regional secretary of the taxi drivers’ union affiliated with the General Union of Moroccan Workers (UGTM), Hassan Doukali.
The rate for large taxis will see a 50% increase in the price of the trip, while the cost of small taxis should not change. Another major decision taken during this meeting is the wearing of protective masks by taxi drivers and passengers.
In addition, the activity of the 226 taxis in Témara will gradually resume, with a rotation of 56 taxis per day during the state of health emergency, pending the lifting of the health confinement measures. As for the screening tests carried out on Monday by the taxi drivers, they will be displayed on the windshields of their vehicles so that the traffic agents can check them, while the 2,000 other taxis are being tested.
