Dangerous Landslides Paralyze Vital Marrakech-Ouarzazate Road, Renewing Calls for Tichka Tunnel Project

Traffic on National Road No. 9, connecting Marrakech to Ouarzazate, has again been severely disrupted this week. Rock falls and landslides, following torrential rains, have caused near-paralysis of traffic on the section between Telouet and Aguelmous, highlighting the vulnerability of this major road axis.
According to local sources reported by the Al3omk website, these landslides are the result of heavy rainfall recorded in the province of Ouarzazate. The obstruction of the road has led to significant delays for travelers and has raised concerns about the safety of users, exposed to the risk of further rock falls on this heavily used route.
The recurrent nature of these incidents on the Tichka road constitutes a recognized threat to motorists. As a result, calls have again been made to the Ministry of Equipment and Transport to conduct an on-site assessment. The objective is to precisely identify the sites with a high risk of landslides in order to prevent a potentially serious accident.
Beyond emergency interventions, this event has once again highlighted the long-standing demand for a structural solution. Residents of the Drâa-Tafilalet region, as well as civil society actors and professionals, have reiterated their call to accelerate the launch of the Tichka or Ourika tunnel project. This project is considered the most suitable solution to secure the axis and open up the South-East region.
According to its promoters, the construction of a tunnel would bring multiple benefits. In addition to strengthening road safety by bypassing the current mountainous route, it would significantly reduce the travel time between Marrakech and Ouarzazate. Such a structure is thus considered essential to boost economic and tourism activity, currently hampered by the difficult topography and climatic conditions of the region.
