Ourika Tunnel: Nizar Baraka points to the inability of Moroccan companies
The road link project between Marrakech and Ouarzazate is taking a decisive step. The Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, confirmed that the Ourika tunnel option is now considered the most appropriate, thus ruling out the alternative of the Tichka tunnel.
Planned to extend over a length of 10 kilometers, this tunnel is the subject of particular attention regarding its technical viability. While the initial studies have been completed, the ministry is currently conducting an in-depth assessment of the geological conditions. This phase is essential to ensure the safety and quality of the structure before the start of the work.
Nizar Baraka also provided clarification on the delays encountered during the initial phases of the project. The minister acknowledged that the Moroccan companies consulted were unable to provide the required complex technical study. "The company that is going to take care of it is not capable, we have been stuck," he specified to explain the temporary suspension of the file.
To unblock the situation, the department has called on foreign companies. Several proposals have been received and the files are currently being carefully examined by the ministry’s services.
Despite these technical and administrative obstacles, the minister assured that the realization of the tunnel is certain. Its strategic importance for the development of the region, coupled with the Royal High Directives, makes it a priority project.
