Morocco Stuns Nigeria in Penalty Shootout to Reach Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Final

Monday, July 18 was a memorable day for the Moroccan women who qualified for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations final, at the Moulay Abdellah Complex in Rabat, by defeating Nigeria after the stressful penalty shootout.
Morocco in the final of the women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Reynald Pedros’ protégées held on, invigorated by the presence of the supporters who massively made the trip. The score in regulation time was (1-1). It took extra time followed by the trial that all teams in the world fear for the Atlas Lionesses to manage to dispose of the Super Falcons, who were favorites with the bookmakers. The score after the penalty shootout was (5-4).
The Moroccan players showed themselves to be ambitious, determined, but also under pressure, especially after Mrabet’s own goal. But they were able to count on the strength of a public whose attendance remains a record in Africa in the history of women’s football. The Atlas Lionesses were able to count on the support of more than 45,000 supporters who believed in the victory and remained united until the final whistle.
The Nigerians finished the match with 9 players, following the expulsion of two players for very serious unsportsmanlike acts towards Moroccan players. Mission almost accomplished for Reynald Pedros and his players. Many were skeptical about Morocco’s ability to go far in the competition, the results have just proven the opposite. For the final, the Lionesses will have to face South Africa on July 23 in Rabat. A much stronger turnout of Moroccan supporters is expected who hope to see the national team at the top of the podium.
