South Africa Clinches First Women’s AFCON Title, Defeats Morocco 2-1 in Final

The Lionesses of the Atlas were held in check by the Banyana Banyana in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, Saturday, July 23. The final score was 2 to 1 for South Africa, who thus win their first continental title.
A shattered dream for Reynald Pedros and his protégées. The Moroccans believed in it until the end. At the end of the first half, the score was nil-nil.
But on the restart, the South Africans prevailed thanks to a brace from Hildah Magaia in the 63rd and 71st minutes of play. The sole Moroccan goal came in the 80th minute and was the work of Rosella Ayane.
Morocco had qualified for the Women’s AFCON final by eliminating Nigeria, eleven-time African champion, while the South African selection had booked their ticket by defeating Zambia.
