Morocco’s Small Businesses Sidelined as World Cup 2030 Projects Favor Large Companies

Most of the major projects launched in Morocco as part of the preparations for the 2030 World Cup have been entrusted to large companies at the expense of small and medium-sized enterprises. These large groups are importing construction materials, neglecting local production.
Professionals in the construction and public works sector disapprove of the choice of large groups to ignore the principle of national preference, established by the government to allow the consumption of locally produced materials.
In a statement to Rue20, they denounce the fact that these large companies are importing construction materials such as aluminum, wood, tiles, and other products, especially from China and Turkey, neglecting local products.
This situation has forced many local small businesses, the subcontractors in particular, to close down, according to the professionals, who blame the Ministry of Commerce and Industry for its inaction to relieve these companies as well as local producers.
To avoid this fierce competition from large companies, small and medium-sized enterprises had wished for the implementation of a quota as part of the national preference principle.
