Illegal Key Holders Threaten Tourist Safety in Moroccan Coastal Cities

The scene repeats itself every summer. People line up at the entrance of the city of Tetouan and other surrounding municipalities, waving keys to offer rental apartments to passers-by.
This recurring phenomenon harms the image of the region, denounce some observers, stressing that these intermediaries, known as "Moul Sarout" (the key holder), violate the texts in force. According to some local sources, this anarchy is attributable to certain real estate agencies in Martil who employ these illegal intermediaries to whom they pay commissions.
In the past, some delinquents and wanted persons have exploited this network to rent out housing that has subsequently been used to commit crimes, it is recalled, warning about the security risks. Voices are raised every summer season to call for the regulation of this sector in order to guarantee the safety of visitors and preserve the tourist reputation of the city.
