Morocco's Romain Saïss Sets Sights on Africa Cup of Nations Trophy

Finishing 4th at the World Cup is a form of pressure on the shoulders of the Atlas Lions who have an obligation to shine at the next Africa Cup of Nations. This is what Romain Saïss, the captain of the national team, thinks.

After their exploits at the 2022 World Cup and a fine victory in a friendly against Brazil, Morocco is already thinking about the 2023 CAN. Invited on RMC Sport, Romain Saïss declared that Morocco must assume its "status as a favorite" and win the trophy. "We are thirsty for victories," confided the Moroccan player. For him, "Morocco deserves to lift the trophy". Winning the 2023 CAN would be like a kind of reward for the journey of the Atlas Lions at the World Cup in Qatar.

"We can no longer hide, we have to accept our responsibilities, this status as a favorite," emphasizes the central defender when talking about the latest FIFA ranking that places Morocco 11th. "We are thirsty for victories, for trophies, the coach has instilled this winning culture since he arrived. We can see that everyone is receptive, we have to continue with this mentality and this state of mind to win this trophy in Côte d’Ivoire," he said. But in the meantime, Romain Saïss hopes to win against Peru this Tuesday evening in Madrid.

Let’s remember that even though Morocco has qualified for the 2023 CAN, it still has two more games to play. The first against South Africa on June 12 and the second at home against Liberia on September 4. Morocco had beaten South Africa (2-1) and Liberia (2-0) in the previous matchdays of group K which only has three countries.
