Morocco Road Crisis: Rural Infrastructure Deteriorating Rapidly
The Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, has warned about the rapid deterioration of rural roads. Faced with the inaction of local authorities, his ministry is attempting to save these expensive infrastructures left abandoned.
During an oral question session at the House of Councillors this Tuesday, the minister painted a severe picture. The billions of dirhams invested in the construction of rural roads are going up in smoke after only four or five years, due to a complete absence of maintenance. Nizar Baraka directly pointed to the responsibility of territorial authorities. According to him, these authorities refuse to classify these road axes, citing a lack of budget to ensure their upkeep. Faced with this impasse, his department has had to become involved in these rescue operations, although this does not fall within its direct remit.

In parallel, a comprehensive review of the road network classification is underway. The minister mentioned the concerning deterioration of several national roads, particularly in the Al Haouz province. To remedy this situation, construction projects are being launched, such as national road number 7 connecting Tahanaout to Taroudant. In accordance with royal directives following the Al Haouz earthquake, this road is currently undergoing widening work to increase from 4 to 7 meters in width.
