Morocco Restricts Pool Filling to Once a Year Amid Water Conservation Efforts

Abdelouafi Laftit, the Minister of the Interior, assured that the Walis of the regions and the governors of the prefectures and provinces are instructed to ensure strict compliance with the measures aimed at rationing water, in particular the prohibition of filling private and public swimming pools more than once a year.

Tourist, sports and leisure establishments, as well as individuals, are not authorized to fill swimming pools more than once a year, Laftit recalled, stressing that these establishments will necessarily have to have water recycling and filtration systems, "under penalty of coercive sanctions on the basis of reports drawn up by the competent authorities".

Water saving plans are also planned, said the Minister of the Interior in his response to a written question from the deputies of the National Union of Labor in the Chamber of Advisors. They take into account the regular maintenance of public and internal networks, the installation of intelligent equipment and the organization of awareness campaigns on the rational use of drinking water and its importance.

The member of the government also warned against water stress due to the scarcity of rainfall, causing a drop in the filling rates of dams and groundwater resources. Circulars have been sent to the Walis and governors to strengthen controls at the level of prefectures and provinces, in accordance with Article 89 of Law No.
