Morocco Reports Significant Drop in School Dropout Rates Across All Education Levels

Nearly 55,200 students dropped out of school in the three cycles of education, the 2019-2020 school year. The announcement was made on Tuesday in Rabat by the Minister of National Education, Vocational Training, Higher Education and Scientific Research, Saaid Amzazi.

The minister painted the picture before the Commission on Education, Culture and Communication at the House of Representatives: "The percentage of students who dropped out of school between the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 school years went from 2.7% to 2.1% in primary education, from 12.1% to 10.4% in secondary education and from 8.8% to 7.4% in vocational secondary education". For the 2020-2021 school year, the number of educational establishments has reached 11,487, including 6,309 in rural areas (55%), in addition to 13,155 satellite schools. The number of boarding schools is 924 nationwide, including 575 in rural areas.

For the current school year, there are 188 community schools, i.e. 64 more than in the 2017-2018 school year, in addition to the planning of the construction of 104 other community schools (45 schools in 2021, 30 in 2022 and 29 in 2023. The construction of 150 units is planned for the 2022-2026 period in partnership with the European Investment Bank (EIB).

Amzazi also presented the measures taken to implement the provisions of the framework law 17.51, including the realization of a study on the evaluation of the overall amount of the reform until 2030, the implementation of regional plans for the implementation of the framework law and the action plan of the Regional Academies and multi-year universities 2021-2023, in addition to the harmonization of the 2021 performance efficiency project and the budget management system with the strategic projects dedicated to the application of the framework law. Not to mention the development of a legislative and organizational plan that includes 81 laws and reference documents.
