Morocco Expands Higher Education: 21 New University Institutions Opened Since 2021

The minister indicated that in addition to the 40 university institutions that were created over the past four years, 11 new establishments opened their doors for the 2020-2021 academic year in the cities of Béni Mellal, El Jadida, Kénitra, Agadir, Fkih Bensaleh, Casablanca, Fez and Settat.

Until the 2019-2020 academic year, 81 university institutions out of a total of 147 had limited access, with a total of 165,782 teaching seats out of 518,896 for 6,182 permanent teachers out of a total of 14,964, specified the minister who was responding to an oral question in the House of Councillors on "the increase in the number of higher education institutions with limited access".

According to the minister, for the 2020-2021 academic year, 659,128 students enrolled in these institutes, out of a total of more than one million. He also recalled that the teaching seats have been increased in these limited access establishments, particularly for engineers, doctors and specialized executives.

As for the private higher education sector, it has been strengthened by the emergence of universities and institutions that are the result of a partnership between the State and non-profit institutions, added Ouaouicha, who argued that these new establishments have contributed to the diversification of the educational offer and the creation of additional teaching seats in limited access programs.
