Morocco to Open 34 New University Institutes in 2020, Expanding Higher Education

The news was announced on Monday, January 6 in Rabat by Saaid Amzazi, Minister of National Education, Vocational Training, Higher Education and Scientific Research. In addition to the 145 existing institutions in Morocco, 34 new university institutes will be added in 2020.
Before the House of Representatives, Saaid Amzazi, Minister of National Education, Vocational Training, Higher Education and Scientific Research, detailed the 145 establishments owned by the kingdom. The authority noted that there are 61 open access establishments and 84 others with limited access, spread across 36 prefectures and provinces.
Saaid Amzazi emphasized the 34 university institutes that will open their doors in 2020. These include multidisciplinary faculties, higher schools of technology, higher schools of education and training, national schools of commerce and management, engineering schools, faculties of economics and management, the National Institute of Solidarity and Social Economy, and faculties of medicine and pharmacy.
According to the minister, the construction of these new institutes responds to the desire of his department to anticipate the implementation of advanced regionalization, by opting for the "strengthening of university infrastructure in the different regions, in order to bring the educational offer closer, particularly in the provinces with a rural character," he said. To this end, decrees have been adopted to allow the creation and promotion of the university establishments in question.
Furthermore, Saaid Amzazi specified that the university offer in the southern provinces has been consolidated, with in particular the launch of the construction of a faculty of medicine and pharmacy in Laâyoune. A project to which a budget of 350 million DH has been allocated. This is in addition to the realization of a Higher School of Technology in Dakhla, a faculty of economics and management in Guelmim, a university center in Sidi Ifni and another center offering a professional bachelor’s degree in Assa and El Ouatia.
All these actions are a sign of sustained commitment, which testifies to the importance that the issue of education holds in the kingdom, he said.
