Morocco Reports Slight Decline in School Dropout Rates, Minister Says

School dropout is declining in Morocco. This is at least what the data communicated by Saïd Amzazi, minister in charge of National Education, Vocational Training, Higher Education and Scientific Research, indicates.
In total, 304,545 students had been victims of school dropout, including 160,837 who had interrupted secondary education during the last school year, he specified. According to the minister’s explanations, the percentage of students who had dropped out of school was higher in the past, going from 12% of the total number of students during the 2018 school year to 10.4%, with a number of students who had interrupted their schooling amounting to 183,985 students.
As for primary education, the ministry’s official data indicate that the percentage of students who dropped out of school fell from 2.7% (95,191 students) to 2.1% (76,574). As for the dropout rate in secondary education, it went from 8.8% to 7.4%, i.e. from 80,569 students to 67,134.
The minister also explained that the 2019-2020 school year recorded a significant decrease in the number of students who dropped out of school in the three cycles of education, thus amounting to less than 55,200 students.
To reverse the trend, Mr. Amzazi stressed that the action plan of the national education sector for the period 2021-2023 will include a set of procedures and processes depending on each project. Among the most important measures related to the achievement of sectoral justice, we can mention, among others, the planning of the construction of 104 community schools distributed in 45 schools for the year 2021, 30 schools for the year 2022 and 29 schools for the year 2023.
