Morocco Reignites Tensions: Ceuta and Melilla Liberation Group Resurfaces Amid Border Customs Closure

The Committee for the Liberation of Ceuta and Melilla has relaunched its activities last weekend, under the name of the National Coordination Committee for the Defense of the Causes of the Kingdom of Morocco. At its head, Yahya Yahya, former mayor of Beni Ensar and former Moroccan senator, who had led the organization between 2007 and 2014 and threatened to occupy the Spanish rocks.
The reactivation of this group coincides with the closure of the commercial customs of Ceuta and Melilla, decided unilaterally by Morocco, according to Juan Imbroda, president of Melilla. "There is no more commercial customs until further notice," said the official. The commercial customs office of Ceuta, inaugurated last February, is also paralyzed, according to El Debate.
This resumption of the activities of the Committee for the Liberation of Ceuta, Melilla and the Spanish islands and rocks also coincides with the anniversary of the Perejil Island (Leila) crisis and is part of a context of continuous rearmament of Morocco, with the support of its privileged partners, the United States and Israel.
Meanwhile, the Spanish navy continues its presence and surveillance missions in these areas in order to strengthen security there. The maritime action ship Furor is currently carrying out a deterrence mission in the areas near the rock of Al Hoceima, Vélez de la Gomera and the island of Alborán. The objective is to control maritime traffic and maintain a level of alert in order to react quickly in the event of a potential threat at sea.
