Morocco Probes Alleged Misuse of Municipal Funds in Nador Election Campaign

The Ministry of the Interior wants to know more about the subsidies granted by certain elected assemblies to associations under very vague conditions. A commission has been instructed to investigate a case in Nador.
According to the daily Assabah, the beneficiary associations would currently be conducting an early election campaign in favor of their donors. The newspaper cites a particular case in Nador where allocations of around 2 million dirhams have been granted under dubious conditions to certain associations.
The Nador municipality would thus have deprived "serious" associations, according to local sources, of municipal subsidies, while those who were able to benefit from them would have been chosen on the basis of their "political and partisan proximity" to the governing bodies of the municipality.
Even phantom associations that have not carried out the slightest action for the benefit of the city are said to have received their financial allocation.
In view of all these facts, the ministry has decided to send an inspection commission to investigate this case, and especially to see the criteria for selecting the beneficiary associations of these aids, particularly in these times of health crisis when local officials keep talking about rationalizing expenses.
