Morocco Poised to Lead Africa in Green Hydrogen Production

Morocco is continuing its momentum in developing the energy sector, particularly that of green hydrogen, commonly referred to as Power-to-X, which is an environmentally friendly energy source par excellence.
With its ambitious energy transition policy and massive investments in renewable energies, Morocco is on the right track to become independent of foreign energy imports and significantly reduce electricity prices for consumers, according to Article 19.
According to the German cooperation agency GIZ, the kingdom will soon be equipped with the first high-volume green hydrogen production plant in Africa. The organization reports that after wind and solar energy, a study on the potential of "Power-to-X" in Morocco has been conducted and a roadmap for the development of a green hydrogen economy has been drawn up.
This molecule, essential for the energy transition, is more than ever a promising and forward-looking solution for Morocco. It can be transformed into electricity or fuel, representing a viable alternative to fossil fuels, which still remain the major energy source for many societies.
In the future, the kingdom could even become an energy exporter and, with the help of green hydrogen, give a boost to the European and German energy transition, the same source points out, noting that its geographical proximity to Europe is an asset in this regard.
