Morocco Invests $9 Billion in Green Hydrogen to Boost Renewable Energy Goals

By 2030, Morocco wants to increase the share of renewable energies to more than 52%. To this end, it has developed an energy model favorable to the production of green hydrogen, by investing 90 billion dirhams over the next ten years.

To decarbonize industry and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, green hydrogen has become a priority in the energy strategies of many countries. Scenting the potential of this new industry, Morocco has positioned itself in this sector, reports Maroc Diplomatique.

Very early on, a national hydrogen commission was created, with the mission of directing and ensuring the follow-up of studies in the field of hydrogen and examining the implementation of the roadmap for the production of hydrogen and its derivatives based on renewable energies.

The ambition is to make Morocco one of the pioneering countries in the field of green fuel production. And things are accelerating: a pilot unit could produce, initially, around 10,000 tons of hydrogen per year from 2025, the same source points out.

Thanks to the first investments and partnerships, the hydrogen produced to date is mainly distributed by Afriquia, from the Akwa group, and Air Liquide, and is intended for the agri-food and industrial sectors. Only the remaining 20% of production is generated by small and medium-sized enterprises.

For the Moroccan authorities, the local development of green hydrogen production is expected to strengthen Moroccan industrialization, forming a new sector capable of creating wealth and jobs.
