Morocco Overtakes South Africa as Africa's Top Automotive Manufacturer

Buoyed by its geopolitical position and potential, Morocco is emerging as a leader in the automotive industry on the continent. The country is cited as number 1 in the sector, thus surpassing South Africa.

Despite the global economic situation, the Moroccan automotive industry has recorded strong growth in recent years. A growth that is not about to stop, as Morocco is climbing among the world’s largest car manufacturers.

According to the Sky News Arabia television channel, the country has become the first African country in the field of automotive manufacturing, positioning itself on the list of the top ten countries in the sector, not only in terms of the number of cars produced, but also in terms of the local integration rate, which stands at 60%.

In detail, the exports of the Kingdom’s automotive sector increased by 4.1% in February 2021, reaching a value of around 15.74 billion dirhams, noting that the volume of sector exports at the end of 2021 reached nearly 22 billion dirhams, compared to 16 billion dirhams in the third quarter of 2020, an increase of 40%, according to the Foreign Exchange Office.

These figures are strong indicators of the attractiveness and flexibility of the Moroccan automotive platform, which, despite the difficult global situation, has managed to maintain its competitiveness and preserve the confidence of global players in the sector, and to quickly regain its momentum with the economic recovery, writes Sky News Arabia.
