Morocco’s Exports Surge 14.9% Despite Pandemic Challenges

Despite the difficulties related to the Covid-19 pandemic, Moroccan exports increased last year thanks to a good performance of Moroccan markets abroad.
This health crisis has, of course, slowed the increase in export trade, but the government is taking into account the recent statistics which show an improvement in exports, once again confirming the resilience of certain export sectors of the Kingdom.
Thus, Moroccan exports increased by 14.9% compared to the end of 2019, as trade is slowly recovering from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, said government spokesman Mustapha Baitas.
"Moroccan exports continued the same momentum in the first month of 2022, which recorded a 23% growth in exports compared to the same month of 2021," said the minister, adding that the sector has been largely supported by the "Made in Morocco" brand, he specified.
By sector, the automotive industry "continued to prove its competitiveness by recording a 15% increase in its exports in 2021, compared to 2020" reaching 83.8 billion dirhams. As for phosphates and their derivatives, "they more than doubled," according to the press release, as they recorded more than 79.9 billion dirhams due to the global rise in prices, which increased by 57% compared to 2020.
Regarding agri-food products, exports increased by 9% compared to 2020, recording a total of 68.4 billion dirhams. This development is attributed to the strong commercial demand from the food industry. As for textiles and leather, it managed to achieve exports worth 36.3 billion dirhams, recording an increase of 21%, "while the Moroccan textile sector has shown its competitiveness in a period marked by a serious health crisis".
