Morocco Opens Doors to Foreign Doctors, Easing Restrictions on Medical Practice

Morocco will soon welcome the first foreign doctors on its soil. The legal framework already exists with the adoption of a new law on the practice of medicine, in particular, the provisions concerning the facilitation of access conditions for foreigners to practice this profession in the country.

Two decrees have already been adopted in this sense by the government. The first, No. 2.21.640, relating to the practice of medicine, in particular concerns the simplification of access conditions for foreigners to the practice of medicine, as well as the adaptation of the provisions of the draft decree to those of the law relating to the simplification of administrative procedures and formalities, indicates Aujourd’hui Le Maroc, adding that the second decree, No. 2.21.641, concerns the creation of a monitoring commission for the practice of this profession by foreigners in Morocco and the modes of its operation. The only concern of the moment, says the daily, is related to the nationalities that will be favored, given that the texts governing the practice of the profession by foreigners are not very restrictive, thus attracting more people.

According to observers, two factors will count: language and geographical proximity, particularly those from Maghreb, Arab and French-speaking African countries. Lebanon is already distinguishing itself, intending to export a number of its professionals to the kingdom for a long-term settlement. In this sense, its Minister of Foreign Affairs has already officially contacted her Moroccan counterpart to facilitate the settlement of its compatriot doctors. The Cuban ambassador had already taken the same approach with the Minister of Health, in the sense of strengthening medical cooperation with the kingdom. Thus, pending the issuance of the first authorizations for foreign doctors, the two countries are confirming themselves in the race for the settlement of their nationals in Morocco.
