Morocco to Open Jewish Culture Museum, Highlighting Shared Heritage

Serge Berdugo, Secretary General of the Council of Israelite Communities of Morocco (CCIM), said on Monday that the initiative of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to create a museum of Jewish culture is of "absolutely extraordinary" symbolic significance.
According to the statements made to the press by Serge Berdugo, "creating this place of memory in a city that is the cradle of Moroccan civilization, where the imprint of Moroccan Judaism has been most marked, shows the Sovereign’s intention to see that all the currents that have irrigated Moroccan civilization be present".
The Secretary General of the Council of Israelite Communities of Morocco (CCIM), who was speaking on the occasion of the launch ceremony for the restoration work of the "Al Batha" museum and the construction of a museum of Jewish culture, by Mohammed VI, added that "as His Majesty King Mohammed VI pointed out in his speech when receiving Pope Francis, in a world that lacks so many benchmarks, Morocco is paving the way towards genuine tolerance without any ambiguity".
It should be recalled that in order to preserve the national heritage in all its forms of expression and to protect it for the benefit of future generations, King Mohammed VI visited several projects carried out as part of the rehabilitation and enhancement programs of the old medina of Fez last Monday. He also launched the restoration work of the "Al Batha" museum and the construction of a museum of Jewish culture.
For the Secretary General of the Council of Israelite Communities of Morocco, this museum of Jewish culture will have a symbolic role of "great value abroad" and will allow people who come from all over the world to see how, for hundreds of years, Jews and Muslims lived peacefully in Morocco and created an art of living together.
