Morocco’s King Orders First Elections for Jewish Community Bodies Since 1969

The order comes from the king Mohammed VI. The sovereign has just ordered the organization of elections for the representative bodies of Moroccan Israelite communities.
It is the Ministry of the Interior that will be responsible for organizing these elections, which have not been held, it should be recalled, since 1969, according to a statement published on Friday.
The king "has also asked the Minister of the Interior to ensure henceforth the respect of the periodicity of the renewal of these bodies in accordance with the provisions of the Dahir of May 7, 1945 relating to the reorganization of the committees of Israelite communities," the ministry said.
However, no date has been given by the Ministry of the Interior for the organization of these elections.
During a visit made earlier this week to Fez, the sovereign also launched the work for the construction of the Jewish culture museum which, according to Serge Berdugo, Secretary General of the Council of Israelite Communities of Morocco (CCIM), is of "absolutely extraordinary" symbolic significance. It will allow "people who come from everywhere to see how, for hundreds of years, Jews and Muslims lived peacefully in Morocco and created an art of living together".
