Morocco's ONEE Refutes Claims of Deliberate Pollution in Marchica Lagoon

The information that the Marchica lake would be the subject of deliberate pollution is false, says the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE), which published the report of a commission commissioned from August 4 to 6 on site.

This mission was initiated following multiple denunciations, reporting deliberate discharges of wastewater into the Marchica lagoon, indicates a press release from the office, specifying that the General Director of the Office has instructed a team to inquire on site about the situation of all the discharge points discharging into this lagoon.

No deliberate discharge of wastewater was observed and no foul odor was felt at the level of all the existing discharge points that could discharge into the lagoon, the office concluded, citing the report of the various visits made by the commission to the discharge points, objects of the denunciations.

The same source emphasizes that sanitation teams on site are constantly mobilized for the monitoring and management of sanitation works, especially during this summer period characterized by the influx of a large number of visitors to the city of Nador.

In addition, the office’s services are said to be in continuous coordination with the local authorities and the Agency for the Development of the Marchica Lagoon Site in Nador in order to carry out the necessary actions to avoid any possible discharge towards the said lagoon, with a view to preserving this site with high biological and ecological potential, it is added.
